As suspected the Islanders have recalled Strome after the Olympic blunder which happened to the team over the NHL’s extended holidays. (Read more at the Fantasy Hockey Manager article on this matter here). So your wondering if Strome can be a effective player in your lineup or if he is going to be crumble under the massive pressure that is going to be put on him over the next few weeks. We have some of the answers. Lets take a look at some of the stats surrounding him & his ability to play under similar circumstances;
Individual Play: (stats provided from hockeydb.com)
|2012-13||Bridgeport Sound Tigers||AHL||10||2||5||7||4||-1|
|2013-14||Bridgeport Sound Tigers*||AHL||37||13||36||49||41||16|
|2013-14||New York Islanders||NHL||15||1||3||4||2||-1|
Its quite evident that he is a stud in every step of the way until the NHL. As a top rated prospect, we can expect nothing less. We can see by his recent NHL numbers that he may need some time to adjust to the “show” and will need to develop some chemistry with linemates before producing. Look no further than the extremely talented Jonathan Huberdeau if you want to see an example of a great player on a bad team (he’s not producing).
The above is the likely shakedown of lines for at least the first few weeks unless Strome comes strong out of the gate. Which really does not leave Strome in a favourable position to succeed and considering the islanders are 18th in the league for PPG goals with 34 and Tavares was good for 8 of those… we cant be overly optimistic. Strome is also going to need to outplay Lee Anders for this top spot (which shoudlnt be that tough) annnndd the Islanders have a nack for protecting talented players from developing too quickly.
So your thinking.. no positives here… why should i grab him off the waiver wire.
I refer you to the following video of his junior & ahl career. Given, this was not fair to the defence-men.
Then i want to note Strome was invited to the AHL allstar game as a rookie, won a few talent competitions, scored twice & looked like the best player there.. The AHL is no joke, and these games are not the cake walk they are in the NHL, they are a audition.
If all the Scouts tell you he is a sleeper at the start of the season in your fantasy league, then has chance to take the No.1 centre position. Snap him up.
